Let Your Surroundings Reflect Your Personal Brand

From the September 2024 issue of 517 Magazine, here are my tips for decorating your home with your own personal flair:

Last month, I shared tips on how to ensure your business reflects your brand’s values, but I don’t want to overlook how our homes are an extension of our personal brand.

We communicate volumes about ourselves and our values in how we adorn our homes. A recent Instagram Reel spoke to how we have been conditioned to continuously consider reselling (or re- renting) our homes rather than living in them in ways that make us happy. While that may seem like sound financial guidance, it can often lead to homes that feel impersonal and lack character. So, this month I am sharing tips on how to get away from playing it safe and letting your home be a source of joy.

  • One of the first steps in designing a happy living space is to identify what truly matters to you. Think about the colors that lift your spirits, the types of furniture that make you feel comfortable and the decor that tells your unique story. If a vibrant-yellow kitchen or a cozy reading nook filled with your favorite books make you smile, then those should take precedence over neutral tones and generic layouts.

  • Personal touches can transform a house into a home. Incorporate elements that have sentimental value or that inspire you daily. Whether it’s family photos, artwork from travels or handcrafted pieces, those details infuse your space with warmth and individuality. A well-lived-in sanctuary with character is an enviable environment.

  • Consider the functionality that best suits your lifestyle. If you love hosting dinner parties, create a spacious dining area. If you work from home, carve out a dedicated and inspiring office space. Tailoring your home to your needs not only enhances your daily life but also ensures that every corner of your home is utilized and loved.

Most people go through a depersonalization process before moving to create a landlord- or Realtor-approved space. I say, as long as you’re the one living there, fill it with all the things that bring you comfort and happiness. A nurturing environment enhances your quality of life. Embrace the freedom to make your home uniquely yours, and let your happiness guide your design choices.

In the end, a space filled with joy is the most valuable asset of all.
