Tips from the Oracle

As published in 517 Magazine’s January/ February 2025 issue:

From my late teens through my mid-20s, I was an apartment dweller.

Between my student housing era and those first years of living alone, moving to a new place was an annual event. I made the most of it, but I looked forward to one day planting roots in my own home.

However, a year into homeowner life, I wasn’t feeling as peaceful as I expected. I didn’t know why, but the second anniversary of homeownership had me taking out a home equity loan to renovate my condo. A year after that, I purchased new bedding and upgraded my walk-in closet. Amid my fourth year, I was offered a job that required me to relocate an hour away, so I excitedly went to work house-hunting in another city.

As I began year five in a 120-year-old house in an old neighborhood, it finally dawned on me: I had been missing that new-home energy, even if the new home had been standing for more than a century. While I hadn’t enjoyed moving every time my lease expired, I did love a fresh start within new-to-me walls and all the potential the experience embodies.

Now in my second 120-year-old home that I’ve lived in for many years, there is something to be said for the comfort of a familiar place that has stood the test of time, but energy can definitely stagnate.

Our spaces can also accumulate unwanted energy with every person or object we invite in. Moving every year isn’t ideal for most of us, so how do we keep the energy in our homes and businesses feeling harmonious?

I reached out to Candice Pizzo of Oracle’s Apothecary in Old Town to get her top tips for going into 2025 with an energetically clean house.

While Pizzo carries a full line of natural beauty and cleansing products, she shared that there are a number of simple things we can all do to improve the energy in our homes and workplaces. She said rosemary, cedar, lavender and juniper are great at cleansing energy that no longer belongs in your space. You can use them a few different ways, such as:

  • Creating simmer pots on the stove.

  • Burning candles with their essential oils.

  • Using them in wall washes and mop water.

  • Sprinkling carpet powders containing them when you vacuum.

Oracle’s Apothecary offers custom products and services to help align your space with your intentions. I highly recommend visiting Pizzo’s shop or visiting her website at oraclesapothecary.com.

I also created a shopping list for decor that would lend to a more spirituality- and energy-centric vibe in your place.
